Bartolo Colon's magical season has taken a turn for the worse.

The 38-year-old was knocked out after only two-thirds of an inning Thursday, giving up eight runs on six hits and two walks in the Yankees' 16-7 loss to the Blue Jays.

Only three of the runs were earned thanks to an untimely error by third baseman Eduardo Nunez, but Colon couldn't stop the bleeding after the miscue, allowing two infield singles and a double before being pulled.

"He wasn't hit really that hard," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's hard to figure out what to make of that start, because we didn't play good defense."

The two-thirds of an inning matched the shortest start of Colon's career, something he did only once before, back in 1997 while pitching for the Indians. Colon (6-5) has lost two straight starts, allowing 13 runs — only eight of them earned — in 6 1/3 innings, giving up 16 hits and six walks while striking out one.

Girardi didn't think Colon was throwing the ball poorly, but after watching his starter throw 42 pitches, he decided it was time to get him out of the game.

"You start to worry about the pitch count and him hurting his arm," Girardi said. "When you're over 40 pitches, how far are you going to let him go? Are you going to let him throw 60 in one inning? That's just not what a starter does. For Bartolo, who is always extremely efficient, he's not built to do that. There aren't a whole lot of guys who are."

The poor outing came on the same day news broke that Major League Baseball was examining medical records relating to Colon's stem-cell treatment in the Dominican Republic last year. Colon's doctor has said stem cells were injected in Colon's ailing elbow and shoulder.
